The Government has approved an amendment to the Medicines Control Orders to restrict the use of the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis.
The Medicines Control Orders (MRCO) are required to be updated and the medicines are not allowed to be used in the following areas:
The Medicines Control Orders will only be available to prescribers through the MHRA service after being reviewed by a public Health Commissioner, who review the Medicines Control Orders to ensure that the Medicines Control Orders apply to the public.
The MHRA review process involves a review by a specialist pharmacist, who will assess whether the patient's condition is a cause for concern, address any potential risk to the patient and determine whether the patient should continue to take the drugs.
The patient will then be given a list of drugs to be prescribed, including their recommended dose, and will be asked to provide the recommended dose on or before the patient has been prescribed the medication.
In the event of a drug interaction between Viagra and Cialis, the patient will be given a small red tablet and they will be advised to stop taking the medication.
It is recommended that any drugs that are currently authorised for use in the UK be removed from the Medicines Control Orders to ensure that they are not used in patients who have not previously taken certain medicines.
The MHRA review process has been reviewed by the Health Research Authority, which will assess whether the patient's condition is likely to be assessed on a case by case basis.
In the event of a drug interaction, the patient will be asked to stop the treatment and the patient will be advised to seek medical advice if they experience any symptoms.
The patient will be given a letter from their GP requesting they continue the treatment, and they will be given a video log to view, as well as their GP's letter.
If the patient does not comply with the advice, they will be assessed for side effects and the patient will be required to return to their GP for further advice.
The Medicines Control Orders are made subject to monitoring by the Department of Health. The Department of Health has made changes to the MHRA guidelines to include a discussion of the risks of the drugs and the need for action.
The Medicines Control Orders will not be made public until at least 2025.
This amendment aims to allow prescribers to continue the use of the drugs in accordance with the MHRA guidelines, and allow for a review of the prescribing practices by the Medicines Control Orders.
The Medicines Control Orders are available to pharmacists on a NHS prescription, and may not be available to the general public until at least 2025. It is understood that the Medicines Control Orders are not available to pharmacy staff who are not qualified to prescribe medicines in the UK.
Pipeline staff and the public have asked the Department of Health to provide the list of drugs to be reviewed. The Department has also asked the MHRA to advise the public of the review process and that the Medicines Control Orders will only be available to prescribers after a public Health Commissioner review. The Department of Health has also asked the MHRA to review the prescribing practices of the medicines. The Department has also asked the MHRA to advise the public that the drugs are not being prescribed to patients who have an allergy to sildenafil, tadalafil or any other ingredient contained in the drugs. The drugs are being prescribed to patients who have previously been diagnosed with an allergic reaction to the ingredients of the medicines and are not being prescribed to patients who are currently taking the drugs.
The Department has also asked the MHRA to review the prescribing practices of the medicines as a result of this request and to advise the public that this change will only be available to prescribers after a public Health Commissioner review.
The Department will continue to review the prescribing practices of the medicines and the medicines will be used according to the MHRA guidelines.
